Loving it during my first 8 hrs of ownership : NeatReceipts Mobile Scanner and Digital Filing System

Neat Receipts is a great idea and concept. But the moment you start to really use it disappointment will set in.

The portable scanner works fine. You have to feed the receipt in with a loving delicate touch. I can live with this. Here is the problem. Initially when you do not have much in the library, you can scan and process receipts as fast as you can feed them. Great. BUT, once your library starts to build up, it can take up to two minutes for the program to open and I average about one receipt scan per 1.5 minutes. No kidding.

When you read the Neat Receipts' response to the army of pissed off Mac users they simply acknowledge it doesn't work well when you get more than 900 items scanned and it is our responsibility to not have more than 900 items in our library. Come on Neat Receipts. Any average consumer or average business person makes more than 900 purchases in a year. They expect you to split off your library and create a multitude of sessions. This is a lame diversion from their software engineers fixing the problem.

So, what is their solution, just like the PC vs. Mac ads where PC spends more money on promoting/advertising the product instead of fixing it in R&D.

Mac users, YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. Stay away from this sinkhole of a money pit.

I am now looking at Mariner's Paperless software. Their features and compatible scanners are listed below. Most scanners are already compatible with this software.

A little pricey if you just need the space, but... : Western Digital My Book Essential 2 TB USB 3.0/2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive WDBACW0020HBK-NESN

Let me start off by saying that the drive works without issue on Win7 64-bit, at least in my case - I'm using the Buffalo Usb 3.0 adapter card. First off, probably best to install the Ses driver that is located on the drive. That's right, don't blow away all of the software and other "stuff" (btw, I can think of an additional one word for the "value added" software: useless, clumbsy and bloated all come to mind quickly) prior to locating this driver which is in the "Extras" folder. Not sure why they put what is essentially a mandatory driver in a portfolio called Extras. If you don't load the driver, each time the drive spins up Windows will think it is new hardware unless you install it so I would have likely put it in a portfolio named "driver" or "important". But again, the drive is fast and can be used without the software so I'm not a hater. However, get this, the on/off switch on the back of the drive will only work if you install the software bundle. That's curious isn't it? I only use the drive for periodic large backups so I use the Safely take off Hardware icon in the announcement area to dismount the drive and then I pull the A/C plug from the back of the unit. Look, if you like to load and use the software that comes with these drives, that's fine, then this drive is likely what you are looking for. It appears to have a pretty robust incremental back-up software, a Smart utility and some other stuff - and of course, the power switch enabler! However, if you are like me and plainly want to connect the drive, format it clean and write to it, and be able to turn it off and on without complication, there are likely great drives out there. I understand from an additional one reviewer that the Seagate works like a "standard" Usb Hd. Again, the Wd drive itself is fine, just not clear why they add all of the software. I can only speak for myself, friends and work associates, none of us unquestionably want that stuff and never use it.
